Where are we going?
The British Virgin Islands are a unique cluster of islands situated in the Caribbean. The BVI are said to be one of the best places in the world for sailing, with consistent 15-20kt winds, crystal clear waters, and calm seas. Since the islands are such a popular sailing route, you will find many sailors traveling or living there long term. There is so much to see on each island and we plan to sail to a different island each day to make the most of this epic vacation.
The Boat
We will be sailing a luxurious sailing catamaran during our trip. A cruising catamaran is a sailboat with two hulls allowing for much more space and stability than a monohull sailboat. We will have a full galley(kitchen), 4+ berths(bedrooms), with accompanying heads(bathroom/shower).
The upper area is for the galley and salon(lounge/dinner), and down the steps from both sides is where each berth lays in the hulls. From the outside there is a large deck area for sailing and boat handling as well as a fly bridge for extra space. Cruising catamarans tend to feel like 3-story buildings. The boat has all the amenities to keep our sailors safe and comfortable as well as sailing components so that we can enjoy turning off the engines and flying with the wind.
Quality is very important for our captain and crew so we make sure to choose the best possible boats available for each location. Here is a sample photo of a similar catamaran to what we will be sailing.
Travel tips
The BVI are only a boat ride away from the US Virgin Islands, with multiple ferry companies traveling between them every day. You can fly to St. Thomas, USVI for a cheaper flight and then take the ferry to Tortola BVI. Many sailors choose this option although you may also fly straight into BVI via Beef Island airport which cost a little more but much easier. The main currency is USD and the locals depend heavily on tourism and tips for income. Taxis are common on the islands and you will find them waiting outside the airports to take you to your destination. The mandatory quarantine for travelers has been lifted only for those who come with proof of vaccination(card) and negative PCR test within 5 days. Things move slowly on the islands, so be sure to switch your mental clock to “island time” and enjoy the moment.
